cold wind!!!!

This morning when i got up and was by the kitchen sink i heard a noise like someone had just flushed the stool.I couldn't actually hear water running but the water pipes were making a noise.Iwent from sink to sink and from stool to stool and everywhere i went from main floor to basement---i heard all these water pipes or copper tubbing pipes making a noise. Finally Dad went outside to check the outdoor faucet right under our kitchen window-----digging through the snow he found our faucet was running not full blast but a continual med flow. So called the plummer and he came at noon and had to put a new faucet outdoors.Problem solved!!! So how long the water ran --don't know.I thought what if that had happened when we are all at the motel----- we probably would have had a flooded basement when we got home..I was scared that maybe our basement wall and flour would start to get wet this morning as the water was running into the rocks and right to the basement kitchen window. All turned out o k.
It is really cold and windy out and lots of ground drifting.
Everyone have a happy new year and try to stay healthy.Love grandma

vehicles

Just from my window I can see 4 vehicles that are stuck in the parking lot. There is 3 huge drifts and there is a vehicle or two stuck ini each one. I don't how they thought they were going to get through them. Oh well, it is good entertainment watching them through my window.

Merry Christmas everyone, Vonda

Christmas 08

I went to the doctor today and received the results of the cat scan I had done last week Monday and there was no change. A year ago, this December (when all these health problems started) I was given a bunch of various tests and during one of these tests they noticed I have spots on both lungs. So they ordered a cat scan a year ago for a "base line" image. Then I had cat scans done again in March, June, Sept and then a week ago. The cat scan done this past March showed they had grown since December of 08, the cat scan in June showed they grew (just slightly) and there was no chang on teh September cat scan or the one I just had done. So he said that I no longer need to follow up on these (YEAH!). The reason they were just doing the cat scans and not biopsying them is because they are to small to even biopsy but with my history they wanted to follow up and make sure they didn't continue to grow. The research I did on the internet says there could be many different causes and all articles said to do just what the doctor did and that is follow up on it every 3 months until they stop growing, or are big enough to biopsy.

Looking forward to seeing everyone (weather permitting) on Friday. Love ya all, Vonda

Christmas 08

I was going to put up a few Christmas pictures from last year, every day this month to get us all in the Christmas spirit but I was without my computer for awhile so I am going to play catch up with the pictures this week.

What Travis didn't say......read his first

First of all Travis, I do appreciate you blogging about the game and will leave that job up to you going forward as I know Arla and the rest of the crew away from Edgerton appreciate it. However, that was a slight detail Travis left out. This is the second varsity game of Travis's that I got to watch and it was a ton of fun, and yes it was as intense as he said it was. However, while I watched the game my mind also thought about how different boys and girls teams are. So I know I will have many nieces who read this but for the rest of this blog it is mainly directed at Scott and Travis.

When Travis was much younger and I would talk basketball with him I at some point in the conversation would call him "Scott Jr" (this is a good thing of course) because he loved the game so much and was always shooting hoops etc... and also because when I'd ask him when their next game was or who they played he never really knew. When I would ask Scott that same thing when he played basketball it was always "i don't know I just show up" I remember watching Scott in high school and how he always stayed composed on the floor even when the game wasn't looking so good or when the fans didn't agree with a call. I remember two times specifically that teammates got in trouble for actions on the floor but Scott never let it gget to him and always had great sportsmanship. I don't rememer what year it was but he was in high school and a parent came up to Arla and said how much they appreciated his attitude and approach to the game and this particular parent said she told her kids that this is who they should model themselves after in a game. So that was cool to hear as an aunt. That brings me to watching travis tonight and i thought to myself , that those cousins are alot alike, they both love the game, practice/d all the time, extremely focused on the floor etc... and Travis's sportsmanship on the floor tonight reminded me of Scott. It started with the National Anthem and Travis was the only one on either team with his hand across his chest. He made a point to shake hands with the starters on the opposing team before the game started. Other times it was just a matter of helping an oppenent up off the floor etc... But at one point in the game he was near the side of the court right in front of the HBC crowd and one of their fans (about a 45 year old guy) stood up on the second bench right in front of Travis and started yelling at him and waiting his finger at him (just like you do when you scold a child) I was so shocked at what i saw I turned to those sitting nexst to me and Dianne Huisken and I just looked at each other - and she said "did you see that guy and how he was in Travis's face"

So I admit it I was mad. I could not believe an adult would do that to a high school kid. Travis just looked at him and walked away and went and shot his free throws since there had been a foul called. I would have been upset had this been done to any one of the SW kids but it wasn't done to just any of the SW kids it was done to MY NEPHEW! So anyway, fast forward to the end of the game and we lost the game was over and it was time to go home.

So, I could not walk out of the gym without walking past that guy and you know me, I had to say something. I walked up to him, introduced myself and congratulated him on his team winning a hard fought battle. He kind of looked at me strange and then I said I also wanted to let him know that number 31 was my nephew and I didnt appreciate the way he was yelling at him and waiving his finger in his face. I went on to explain that it was a high school game and those actions are not needed. I told him my nephew did'nt deserve that - he went off about how i should ask him about what he did and see if I would be proud of him after that. I told the guy I am proud of him no matter what and if he did something wrong that is for the coach to discuss with him not me. He said I should talk to him about it - I told the guy I didn't see what went down or happened all i could see was him standing up, yelling and pointing a finger in his face and that is what i wanted to discuss with him not the basketball game. He continued to get feisty with me and again encouraged me to ask Travis why he yelled at him. I told the guy that even if Travis did do something wrong I don't understand how he as an adult thinks that standing up, yelling at him and pointing his finger in his face was going to solve anything as he should lead by example. He kept telling me to ask Travisk what he did but everytime I asked him what upset him so much to do that to a high school boy - he had no answer. I asked serveral times for him to tell me what caused him to get so upset and he woudln't do it. Finally he jsut said "you have a Merry Christmas mam" and I wished him a Merry Christmas also and I walked away, went to my car and drove back to Sioux Falls. I talked with Travis later and he didn't really know either why the guy was yelling at him he said he just looked at him for a it and then turned and walked away to shoot his free throws. So I don't know what that guys probelm was but I do know he was a bit taken back by me approaching him.

Scott, this reminded me of the story you told me once where you were taking the ball out of bounds and one of the fans said "I hate you Van Zanten". I asked what you did and you said kind of chuckled and continued on with the game. I know it is a long post but I just wanted to tell these two that they are/were fun to watch and their actions on the court are more important then any amount of points they scored. I love you both, am PROUD to be your Aunt. Scott, thanks for being a great role model on and off the court for your younger cousins and Travis you are doing the same.

*** Now a side note and have to go back a week. I went to Chandler to watch Diedra and Travis playball and Deidra you ahve come a long long way. You do great work out there and for those of you who don't know she starts for JV. Jeremy sat with me for half of Travis's game and I don't think you could find a prouder little brother he definately cheers Travis on during the game. I haven't made it to a grade school game yet but hope to make it to one or two of those also. I don't know if I got this totally right but I believe in the games they have plays Jason has something like 28 points and Jeremy has had a good showing also and even has 2 three pointers this season. Sorry Heather, I am not sure how your team is doing but feel free to blog and let us know (hint hint...)

I am really hoping the weather stays nice so I can make it to many more games.

Love ya all and can't wait for the hotel

SWC vs. HBC

Hey everybody I was asked to blog to keep some of you who live further away updated on the SWC boys basketball games. We played Hills Beaver Creek tonight and lost 73-61. Over all it was a very intense game and i had alot of fun even though we lost. We played probably the best we have all year. It got a little interesting at times as their fans can be very hostile and proved so tonight. A good way to describe playing in Hills is that its pretty much the Cameron Indoor Stadium of the Red Rock Confrence for those of you who know about those good ole Duke fans :( haha. Anyway we have a game on this coming tuesday vs. Sioux Falls Christian which should be another good game and then after that Christmas break and looking forward to seeing everybody at the motel.

snow in Pella

Hello everyone,

Well....we have 3 inches of snow on the ground this morning and they tell us 4-6 inches are possible tomorrow. Snow is pretty, but I sure hate scooping it. I need one of the VW's to come over with their big tractor and bucket and scoop it out for me, then maybe I'd like snow more! :)

We had a nice Thanksgiving. Scott and Jana were around which was really nice, but Jody and Shane were unable to make it, so we did miss them. I had the big meal here with the Mom and Dad VZ. We also enjoyed having all of Jana's friends around over Thanksgiving as well. Jana took a friend of her's here for Thanksgiving. Tawny is from WA and could not make the trip home. She is the one who had surgery and infection set in. She made daily trips to the hospital here in Pella to get IV antibiotics for her infection. She seems to be doing well, for which we are thankful.

We are hoping to make it to Shane and Jody on the 22nd until the 25th of December and then drive to Worthington on Christmas day in order to get to the hotel by that late afternoon or early evening. I'm praying the weather cooperates!

Well....I better go scoop!

Love,
Arla

My mommy says she will write a blog and put up more pictures on her blog later:) I am very excited to see you all in 5 weeks when we are in MN for Christmas.

If I remember right the sweat suits were a Christmas gift from Grandpa and Grandma and the stuffed animal puppies and football were gifts from Uncle Loren when he was back from California.

THEY WON!!!!!!!! WOOO HOOOO YIIPPEEE

Ok, so SW volleyball team tonight played in the second round of tournament. They had a buy the first round and had to play the number 1 ranked team (SW was ranked 4th) and SW won in 4 games.

Since it was Monday night I had to work late, so Mom called right after work and kept me updated how it was going and to let me know that it was being covered by a different raido station then what we thought would cover it. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get it on either my car radio or home radio so mom sent me emails every so often and kept me updated. When it was the 4th game, with about 6 points left and we were ahead, she called me and I listened on the phone to her radio. Hey, it worked.

I won't go into details of how close the games were etc.... becasue I know I won't get all the deails right but just wanted to say congrats to Delaine and the varsity team. They play again in Marshall on Thursday night.

Deidra, could you maybe give a brief recap????

Looking forward to Thursday night,

Well this is what my left arm looks like and pretty much depicts the look of the rest of my body also. I am covered from head to toe and have no idea what is causing this. It started last week, I notticed some spots coming again so I called te doctor and they put me on a dose of steroids again to go along with the zyrtec I take every night. It seems every few months, it comes back and then I take steroids and it goes away again, but it has become more and more frequent and getting worse every time. On Tuesday, I got up and they were back with a vengance and were goign down my legs and arms which I never had before. Today, was horrible so i went to the doctor this morning and she put me on prednisone and hopefully that will supress whatever is causing this till i can see the allergy specialist on November 12th for a consultation and see how to proceed. As mom indicated on top of all this i am back with the diarhea and vomitting again also. The doctor doesn't think this is related but did blood work today and i have to bring in a stool sample tomorrow so they can test it. (yuck, but if it will make me better I am all for it) So today the windows are all open in the apartment so I stay cool and I ahve covered myself with calamine lotion. So the itchiness isn't as bad right now, but the spots haven't left yet either? So, that is my life - now on to some much more exciting lives.
Danielle, very happy for you that the job has come through and what a pervect schedule for you to have. It might have taken abit but don't think you could have really asked for much more. Love the pictures of Zoe. She is getting so grown up and those facial expressions are priceless.
Shane and Jody - I know the answer to your question of where people are usually bleeding from and what you deal with on he GI floor. Loved the story, and glad your levels were all ok Shane but makes me laugh I can just see nurse Jody trying to stop this hang nail from bleeding, Shane going with the flow (no pun intended) and walking around with his arm up in the air to please his wife. On a serious note Shane, I hope you are still wearing your medical id bracelet that says you are on Coumadin. I used to work in a hospital too and although I chuckle at the story you can imagine what would happen if you were in an accident and didn't have your bracelt on. Ok, enought preaching from me on that subject.
Nothing much else to write about --Good luck in tournaments Delaine as they have a volleyball game on Friday night and Jana glad to hear you are feeling better also for your game on friday and Saturday night.
What is new with the rest of the Vander Woude's ???? hint, hint :)

Vonda

Vonda was to the doctor again this morning as she is all broke out with hives again. She also has a somewhat upset stomach and diarrhea--had this a few weeks ago too and was off work for 4 days then.Hopefully she will add to this. Mom

soccer games

It was so much fun watching the 3 cousins on the field together. All 3 of them played great. If I don't have this all straight, I am sorry Jason, Jeremy and Heather but I watched alot of volleyball and soccer that day. You already know how the volleyball team did and the soccer team also placed second. They won the first game 5-1 and Jason had 3 goals and Jeremy had 1 goal in that game. The second game they lost in a shoot out. The third game was tied at the end of regulation. They played 5 more minutes and it was still tied. They went into a shoot out and Jason was the last one to shoot on our team and we were behind 2-1 but he made it and this sent it to a double shoot out. The thing is that in the second shoot out the same players can't kick again so that meant the girls had to do the shoot out and Chandler won! YEAH Jason ended the tournament with 6 goals and Jeremy had 2 or 3 and also did a great job at goalie. Heather surprised everyone with her aggressiveness out there and did awesome attacking the ball. (No joke everyone, you would have been surprised "sweet little Heather" didn't let those boys push her around)

Look at that concentration... Travis would be so proud...

THE POWER!!

More soccer pictures and videos will be posted tomorrow night. I can't put them all on at once as this way it will keep you checking back :)

******A special note to Deidra Danae and Travis Jay********I want to apologize for not getting to many of your games this year but the ones I did it sure was fun to watch. It just seemed like between the teeth, flu and a game or two of yours getting cancelled it just wasn't meant to be. I promise to be at more basketball games.

Good luck in tournaments Delaine. I hope you have many games ahead of you yet.

The medal she won for second place in the volleyball tournament.

I think she had a total of 7 ace serves during the tournament. Tomorrow night I will post soccer tournament pictures. I am feeling better and will be returning to work tomorrow.

Northwestern Game

Hi everyone,
So I don't think I've written on here in forever and I decided I needed a break from studying so I thought I would. First of all thanks to everyone for coming to my games! It's so nice to have a cheering section. I can't quite hear grandma in the games but I watched the videos on the blog and I can definitely hear her yell.:) And Sharla thanks for the salsa. We've had quite a few salsa study breaks and my friends all want to meet you because they love your salsa so much! We play Northwestern on Saturday night, the 31st I think. Hopefully I get to see a lot of you there again and this time I promise it will be a better game than the last time we played! I just wanted to let you all know about the fund raiser we're putting on that night. The volleyball team wanted to do some kind of outreach program this year and we started talking about Amani Baby Cottage where me and my mom went last summer. So we're having a bake sale on the night of the Northwestern game and then people can buy our baked goods or give free will donations and all of the money will go to Amani. Amani still needs money to buy the property that they are on right now so hopefully the money we make will help a little bit for that. So I just wanted to let everyone know about that if you want to check it out before the game. I think I'm going to make a poster with some picture of the kids and everything. Other than that nothing too exciting is going on here. Lots of studying and volleyball. The countdown is already happening for Thanksgiving...only 4 and a half weeks!! Hope everything is going well in Chandler. Good luck in all your sports games Travis, Jeremy, Jason, Heather, and Deidra. I'm planning on coming to watch some basketball once volleyball gets done! Have a good week and hopefully see you all in a week! love, jana

Jana's game

Here are some videos taken of Jana last weekend.

TAKE THAT!

...
AND THAT!!

AND THAT TOO!

No wonder she is tired after the game, look at that footwork when she isn't hitting the ball.

I am not really feeling any better but wanted to get this on the blog. Deidra, if I feel better I will be at your game on Thursday.

Good Luck Deidra and Delaine

I was suppose to be at their volleyball game in Sioux Falls tonight but I left work at 10am this morning as I was throwing up at work. I now have ear aches and sore throat. So wishing them good luck from my apartment.

Travis, thanks for not only posting the pictures of your mohawk but placing a comment to Arlas blog. See blogging isn't so hard and would love to have you do it some more.

The videos and pictures of this weekend will be updated at a later time as don't feel up to it now.

Love you all and stay healthy, this isn't much fun.

Arvins, Lorens, Leons, Grandpa and Grandma and myself will be all at the game tonight. Mom and I are about to leave for Worthington as the Chandler Christian School has a tournament there so we will be watching a bunch of HEathers volleyballs games and Jason and Jeremys soccer games. I don't know if Heather will be playing soccer or not since they don't have enough boys for a team. I will post pictures and videos of everything Sunday night. Love ya all, Vonda

1/4 of the way through the last year... :-(

Hi All,

It has been a while since I have written on here and it has been quite a while since I have seen many of you (or been to Chandler), so I thought I would update you all on our life in OC, IA.

As you can tell by the title, it is now midterm break, so that means I have only 3/4 of a year left at Northwestern. I am having mixed emotions about this as I really love everything about NWC (especially my friends, professors, and psychology courses) but I am still excited about where Jess and I will be a year from now.

I have been super busy this semester with classes, work, applying to graduate school, and, most importantly right now, conducting my senior thesis research. This is a semester long research project, which will hopefully end with a thorough and lengthy (around 40-50 pages total) research report which may be publishable. I will not bore you with the details, but if you are interested just ask because I love to talk about it! While some of you may view this as a stressful situation, I just want you to know that I absolutely love every part of it (even though it can be stressful at points). I guess I picked the right field and career path after all...

I have also been applying to graduate schools, but there is not a lot of news about that situation as applications are not due until Dec. and Jan. I will be sure to keep you all updated when I know more.

Jess has been staying busy with work and fixing up the 1979 Lund fishing boat we got at the beginning of Sept. Now that the weather is getting chilly, he is definitely looking forward to ice fishing season. For now he has stayed busy a couple of weekends going home and helping his dad on the farm, which he always enjoys.

Unfortunately, we have not been able to go to as many of Jana's volleyball games as we would have liked, but we hope to get to a few more before the regular season comes to a close. Maybe we will see some of you there! We have been able to watch our sisters play volleyball at the Unity/MOC tournament about a month ago. We wish we could watch them more, but I guess something is better than nothing!

Well, as it is fall break and I have not left Iowa in 7 weeks (very sad, I know), we decided that we would take a road trip. We are heading up to Seth and Rebecca (Jess' brother and his wife) in Bemidji, MN for a long weekend (Friday to Monday). It is their daughter's (Rhianna) first birthday on Oct. 27, so we are going a little early to celebrate with them (it is crazy to think she is a year old already). Speaking of nieces... it occurred to me that Zoe turned 6 months old on Wednesday! Time really flies and she just gets cuter every day! I don't know about the rest of you, but she is one of the reasons (a big reason) I am already getting excited for Christmas!

That is about it from here (at least all I have time to write). I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and hopefully see you soon!

Love,
Darci

p.s. Does anyone know how many days there are until Christmas? ;-)

Tuesdays soccer game

It was cold and snowy so I took one quick video and these 2 pictures and called it good. After the game went inside and defrosted while we watched Deidras jv team and the varsity team win. I'll be warmer on Monday and post pictures of Deidras game that night. SouthWest plays in Sioux Falls Monday night :) YEAH!

Hi from the VZ

Hi everyone.

Sorry no pictures of me with a mohawk! :) Travis, I'm sorry the mohawks didn't help get you a victory. Oh well....it was worth a try right?! :) Grandma said you got hurt at the game. Are you doing ok?

Deidra, I heard you guys won again...way to go!

Delaine how is your team doing? Sounds according to Mom that all is going well....that's good. When do tournaments start for you?

The weather has been cool and damp here but, the good news is that it's supposed to be in the 60's again next week!

Just a quick update on Scott. He's in the Tucson, AZ region and is currently staying at a hostel there with two guys from France and a guy from CA. Sounds fun and interesting.

We will be heading up to Dordt on Friday for Parent's Weekend. Sounds like we may see some of you at Jana's game on Saturday night?! I hope her and the rest of the team are healthy as we have two tough conference games this weekend. On Tuesday night we had 4 girls missing from the team due to the stomach flu.

Jody and Shane are thinking of making it down to Jana's last two home games on Oct 30 and 31, so we're hoping to see them there and spend some time with them!

I have been busy cleaning every closet in the house. What a lot of junk I've thrown away. Also got all our carpets cleaned in the whole house. I thought after 8 years of pop and pizza stains it might be a good idea to finally clean them. I'm happy with the results and very glad I did it.

Take care,

snow? . . . really?!

so here i am sitting at home saturday morning looking outside at snow!! crazy. travis had a soccer game today but it was obviously cancled so im not sure what im going to do with my day now :S. (thats a confused face for those of you who don't see that, haha). so volleyball is going good. were still undefeated although we were going to play wwg thursday night and they are supposedly a good team but bc of the flu at their school they had to cancle it :(. the game isnt going to be made up either because varsity got to play them still, but now it sounds like another school that played our freshman in a tournament beat them so they want to see if they can take on our jv team. so that will be fun. well not much else has been happening other than sickness and snow. hope everyone is going to have a most wonderful weekend! God bless, talk to you all soon!

Tim Mulder

Thought some of you might be interested in this. It is an email I got from Cindy (Baker)Mulder. For Jody, Scott, and Jana in case you aren't aware of the connection Cindy is Tami Zevenbergens sister. I went to high school and was close friend with both Tim and Cindy.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all As some of you know and some don't Tim is at the beginning stages of a BRIC flare up. He is on the meds that helped shorten it last time, but we really covet your prayers. In the past there has been 13 yrs between flare ups, but we only got 61/2 yrs this time. It took him 3 months last time for it to cycle last time and for him to get back to "normal." My prayer is that since it's only been 6 1/2 yrs that it last only have the time too. I guess that is what I am begging God for anyway. It is so hard to see him this way. He worked this afternoon and it was pretty exhausting for him. He is going to try and work from 10:40 to 4pm each day for the next two weeks, but he isn't very confident he will be working any more by the end of those two weeks. I know you are all really busy, but if any one would have a spare day to help me pull the dock out that would be great. But most of all we covet your prayers. For some reason I don't have everyone's e-mails in contacts so if you could forward this one to anyone I missed I would appreciate it. Love to you all Cindy

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know really much more about this other then what is in the email. I am assuming it is the same thing he had in high school and once after that (which would work according to the time line Cindy gave also) he turns "yellow" and looks jaundiced. He gets extremely tired and fatigued. It pretty much zaps him of all his energy. I will keep you updated

Love ya all, Vonda

Chicago weekend

Hello All!

Seems like a long time since I've written, but I know it's been even longer since some of you others have written anything. :) (hint, hint) :) Don't know a lot.

Jody and Shane met us South of Chicago last weekend to watch Jana/Dordt in a volleyball tournament there. Jana had quite a cheering section, as along with Jody and Shane she also had Shane's parents, G & G Van Zanten, Uncle Tony and Aunt Donna Van Zanten, 4 Calvin friends, 2 Trinity friends and her high school volleyball coach and his wife. We had a great weekend. Jody and Shane stayed at the same hotel as us and the team, so we got to spend time with them and Jana which was really nice.

Jody is getting a women's volleyball group going with in their church. They had 15 women show up last night, so that sounds like a lot of fun as well. Shane has class on Monday and Tuesday nights, so this gives Jody something to do on Tuesday nights.

Scott is in Tucson, AZ and sounds like he is enjoying the warm weather there. Our family spent a week in Tucson last March over spring break, so he is kind of familiar with the area a little bit.

Last night (Tues) we went to Jana's game at Dordt. Mom, Sharla and Jeremiah surprised us by showing up to watch too, so that was very nice!

Jana has her last weekend tournament this weekend Bellevue, NE and then from here on out it is all GPAC games.

I've had a busy, tiring day, as last night was late when we got back from Sioux Center and tomorrow I am getting all the carpets cleaned in our entire house, so today I did a lot of moving of furniture etc to get ready for them to come in early tomorrow morning. This is long over due, but I wanted to wait till all the kids had graduated and we didn't have kids over all the time eating pizze and drinking pop before I had them cleaned.

Take care,
Arla

belated birthday greetings

I might be a day late with the picture but Loren you aren't off the hook with a birthday picture. Hope you had a nice relaxing birthday at the fair. While you were gone enjoying the day I put your kids to work. Keep reading to see what I mean.
The teeth are still a work in progress. The bottom teeth still present me with the most issues. I still can't eat with them in as they are to loose. However, it is back to the dentist again on Wednesday to do some more work on them.
I had "workers" at my apartment on Saturday as the folks, and Jason and Heather drove up to help me haul a new exercise machine up to my apartment. I got rid of the other one as I could no longer use it with my ankle and foot after the surgery. So this is a bike and it works alot better for me. It was quite the project and the folks and I were all glad Jason and Heather came along to help. The folks and I would have had a heck of a time doing it by ourselves so am very thankful that Jason was there to help haul it upstairs and put the machine together. Heather and I tried to stay one step ahead of them by having all the tools, and pieces ready every time they were ready to go to the next step of putting it together. So thanks Dad and Mom and also Jason and Heather for coming along to help me out. I did appreciate it and have used the bike yesterday and today. YEAH!
Take care everyone, Love ya all Vonda

teeth again

Hey, Went to the dentist yesterday and today and had more work done on the bottom denture. I can at least keep it in for more then a few hours at a time now and do not feel like I am gagging all the time. The filed it down and shortened part of it. I go in again next Wednesday and they will just keep working on it one to two times a week till it gets better. it is an ongoing process as the gums stop swelling and the bones settle in so he said really won't be over for another 8-9 months. However, the twice weekly visits will get farther and farther apart as time goes on. Talking at work for 8 hours a day with new dentures --- is an adventure to say the least.

Dordt volleyball

I copied this off the Dordt website. Thought everyone could relate as if you werent in the gym watching Jana play, you have been in the gym watching vatious SouthWest tournaments. I listed to him announce it on the radio and quite often he mentioned how hot that gym was. He even said he was going to cut the conversation short with the coach after the gave so he could get out of that gym. Vonda

Kind of forget about the busy-ness of this time of year. There is never a shortage of things to do and I never feel quite caught up.
Volleyball faced Sioux Falls last night on the road and in an oven like Stewart Center the Defenders showed some grit and won the match, coming from behind at 2-1 to do so. Loy Griess banged out 15 kills as the Sioux Falls defense was intent on stopping Kendra Potgeter (10 kills) and Jana Van Zanten (eight kills). Turning point came in the fourth set when Dordt used a four point run to go from two down to two down, 12-14, 16-14 if my memory serves correctly. Got a big ace serve from Dorinda Hibma in the run. Good for the team to go through a competition like that. And did I mention it was hot…..it was. Hot a gym as I’ve been in….ever. Couple that with being stationed next to a humongous scoreboard that was throwing off heat like nobody’s business. It was like standing next to the sun. Anyhow, off to fifth ranked Northwestern on Saturday night.

TEETH - or the lack there of

Well, after eating soup for a week I have graduated to eating Dried beef gravy on bread. It was great! Still isn't easy to eat but it beats another day of soup. Still can't bite as I tried eating a slice of water mellon and wasn't able to do that. I ended up breaking up pieces of the watermellon and placing it in my mouth instead of biting it of the rind. Oh well, it is good for weight loss.

I didn't work at all this week as wasn't able to talk very well becasue of the dentures so a bit hard to talk on the phone for 8 hours a day then. I went into the dentist on Wednesday and he shaved parts of the dentures down so that eally helped as i had many blisters from tight spots. It will still take some time before it all is "done" but Wednesdays appointment was a huge start.

Just like Grandma...... (teeth)

Just a quick note to let the family know I survived the surgery and no longer have my own teeth. It went well and I had no complications. Mom is here to take care of me and drove me home from the surgeon. The first few hours home consisted of biting down on gauze to apply pressure to the wounds and spitting up blood. I layed down for a nap at 7pmm (sorry Jana) and mom watched Jana's game. I got back up at about 9:30 and have taken more pain pills/sleep pills and hopefully will sleep through the night now. Since, I didn't know what to really expect with this all I mentally prepared for the worst but can say it is going much better then I expected. I woke up with the whole set of dentures in my mouth. I am beginng to swell up in my face and neck but that is to be expected.

Tomorrow, I go the the dentist at 4pm as he wants to look at how I am healing and how the dentures fit. I will go to him twice a week for 2-3 weeks, then once a week for 2-3 weeks, and gradually decline till I don't see him anymore.

NOW FOR THE WEIRD PART...... the lady who called me back to the room to prep me for surgery was a former resident of Chandler! As she was getting me ready with the monitors, iv's etc.. she asked where I was from and I told her I live in Sioux falls now but originally Chandler and she resonded "wow, no way" I lived there for awhile and then we moved to Slayton. She then asked me if I knew a Darla Vander Woude and I said no thinking this must be someone from Slayton. She said that her Mom used to work at the Chandler bank and is back there again. I asked who that was and she said Theresa Myan (not sure of the spelling). She said her little sister went to a daycare in Chandler and that is when I made the connection that "Darla" was really Delaine Vander Woude. She said Yeah, she took care of my sister and I always remember that they had two cute little blonde girls. I asked her wehre she lived and she said in some apartments by "old lady De Kruif" ( with talking with Mom later she was referring to the old Christian Reformed parsonage next to where Leon and Sharla used to live and "old lady DeKruif " is Harvey DeKruifs mom) then she talked about how they moved to Slayton after the tornado. She said she still knows what she wore, where she was at etc.. every moment about that day. She said everytime June 16 rolls around she always things about that. She then asked if I watched the "Weather Channel" when they had the re-enactment on it. I told her that my nephew and niece played the part of some kids who hid under bed. To which she commented "yeah, I graduated from school with Jamie Van Persum, and that is about how she said "we are under the bed" and her mom thought she said "he is dead". So yeah, kind of ironic to find all this out about someone who is ready to pull my teeth.

That is all from toothless Vonda and caretaker Grandma,

FUN WEEKEND....once I got out of Sioux Falls

Well, I will try and give the shortened version of the weekend.

I was supposel to work till 12:30 on Friday and then I was going to meet Mom in Orange City where we would go and watch Jana play her first college Varsity volleyball game. S0 on my 10:30 break from work I drove the car to the gas station to fill up with gas and where I proceeded to have a flat tire (aauuggh). I called Mom as I was walking back to work and told her the situation she said she would pick me up and we would figure this out since I was going to be late getting back to work from my break and would not be able to deal with the tire till work was over. I was unable to take vacation time and jsut leave work early becasue I have to save all my vacation time for when I have my teeth removed on Wednesday.

So Mom picked me up and we went back to the car. I had to drive it (yeah, I know i am no suppose to do that but didn't have much choice at the time becasaue if I left it at the gas stattion they would have towed it) just a liittle ways across the parking lot and park it there where it was further out of the way.

I didn't want to attempt to change it at that time - as I have never fully changed a flat tire before and I thought lets get to the game and I will deal with it on Saturday when I return to Sioux Falls. So Mom and I started to leave Sioux Falls and I called a friend who I thought would be home (back in SF) by Sunday and see if he (yes a he - see above remember he is a friend and that is it) would be able to change it for me on Sunday. Well, it turned out he was in town and was willing to come change it then. So Mom and I turned around and met him at the gas station where he proceeded to put on the bunny tire for me. We thanked him and took off for te game. We only missed 1.5 games or matches (not sure which is correct) and were still able to watch Jana play. GAME 1: won in 3

After that we checked into the hotel :) Grandpa said we might as well do that wether then drive back again on Saturday, THANKS AGAIN DAD!!! Then we met up with the volleyball team and everyone else at the Pizza Ranch for supper. Then went back to the college and watched another game at 8:30 that night. GAME 2: won in 3 Den, Arla, Scott and some of his friends then all went out for ice cream together. It was fun seeing you again Scott hopefully will see you again as some more games.

Saturday we were back for another game at 11am. GAME 3: won in 3 Then a bunch of us went our for dinner at the Nederlanders resteraunt. Mom and I then spent the afternoon shopping in OC and having some fun......:) (pictures and videos to be posted tomorrow -- Jess and Darci - we love you!)

Then it was back to the college and we watched the last of the volleyball games for the weekend. Grandpa, Leon, Sharla and Jeremy drove up and cjoined us for this game. GAME 4 - won in 4
It was fun, fun, fun, fun to watch. Jana rocked it out on the floor.

Then off to Culvers in Sioux Center for supper and goodbyes were said and Leons family headed home and Grandpa and Grandma drove me back to my car in Sioux Falls.

So today I took it to a tire shop and they said the tire was to bad to fix and wanted me to buy new tires. I said to put the bunny tire back on and then I drove to Chandler and exchanged vehicles. They will have McClains check the tires tomorrow and I drove the blazer back to Sioux Falls. The plan is that Mom will drive my car back to Sioux Falls on Wednesday since she will be taking care of me after I have my teeth all pulled that day.

Jana, have another great game and good luck on Wednesday. I will have the computer set for grandma to watch it on but I have a feeling I will be drugged up and trying to sleep it off.

Lets see, for those of you who live away I believe Travis had his first soccer game last week Thursday and lsot a heartbreaker 3-2 in double overtime. He plays again this Tuesday. To my knowledge, SW hasn't played any volleyball games yet.

That is all for now.

Love ya all, Vonda

Birthday's

Happy belated birthday Heather and early birthday Delaine......

Well, it has been awhile since I wrote on here so I thought I would update you on all the new and exciting things going on in my life.

One week from today I get all my teeth pulled. I don't know if that qualifies as new and exciting but that is my life.

The exciting part is that the Friday I get off work at 12:30 and I am driving to Orange City where I will meet mom and go to Jana's tournament game. She plays 2 games on Friday and 2 games on Saturday and we will be staying overnight in a hotel in Orange City. :) Yeah, can't wait --- looking forward to watching you play Jana.

Jess and Darci will we see you there?

GRE... :S

Hi Family,

This is a post to ask for your prayers. Tomorrow at noon I will be taking the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) in Sioux City, IA. I am slightly nervous as this will have some bearing on my graduate school applications and acceptance. I am hoping to earn a good score (that being a score I am satisfied with and falls within the averages of the graduate schools to which I am applying), so that I do not have to take it again during this semester. So, if you think of it, I would appreciate your prayers for tomorrow: safe travel, calm heart, clear mind, and most of all, a great score!

I have been studying for the past two weeks (total of 6 days with a break for Katie's wedding alst weekend), so I feel fairly prepared-- as prepared as one can be for a standardized test, so hopefully it all goes well.

Now that I think about it, Shane is taking graduate coursework... Jody, did he have to take the GRE? If so, any advice?

Thanks all!

Love,
Darci

I was messing around on the computer and came up with this. Enjoy, it was taken at the Worthing ton park the Sunday of Tony, Danielle, and Zoe's farewell. Vonda

Fruit salsa for chips - how daring are you?

3 RIPE MANGO'S ... pieces to be cut into 1/4 inch pieces--
1 tsp vegetable oil
2 Tbsp lime juice
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/3 of a red onion, finely chopped
1/2 bunch of scallion onions

A lady brought this to work and I know it sounds crazy but it is really good with chips. You eat it with chips just like you would any salsa or chip dip. I would personally cut back on the onions. Don't be scared and how about trying something new :)

Mom, did Shela ever give you that salad recipe from when we were at Adrian?

Love ya all, Vonda

packing my "baby"

Hi everyone,

Sad day today. Jana had a bunch of girls overnight last night and as I cleaned up the basement this morning, it made me very sad to think how all these girls will not be here all the time any more. Then we had to pack up the van and Jana's car with all her stuff and that made me even sadder. I can't believe we are actually sending our baby off to college. 25 1/2 years of kids in the home and now it's going to be finished. I can't say I'm looking forward to it, but then I guess, I really don't have much choice in the matter. :) Jana is ready though, so that's good.

We will be getting to Chandler tomorrow night at around 7:30 or 8:00. I don't think Scott is coming along. Be kind of a quick trip, so he says he'll come some other time.

Jana has freshman orientation and they have stuff for parents as well next Saturday the 22nd, so I am going to stay in Chandler Monday night through Friday. Den will come back up on Friday and then we'll head to Sioux Center early Saturday morning. So hopefully, I'll get to see most of you Vander Woude's in those few days!

Today is our 29th Anniversary and we are going to a the wedding of one of Scott's friends. How romantic right? This was another romance that kind of started in our basement when all Scott's friends would hang around on Sunday nights.

Take care. See you soon
Love,
Arla

WHO NEEDS AN EXERCISE MACHINE

Hey everyone, although my foot surgery was a success and most of the pain is now gone, I can no longer use my exercise machine. It puts to much pressure and movement on my foot and causes me pain during and after using it. So if anyone wants the machine or knows of anyone who wants it please let me know as I would like to get rid of it and look for something else i can use in the apartment. The exercise is a tremendous help to my hot flashes and the last couple of weeks they have gotten worse (nothing like right after the surgery) so I would really like to get rid of it and look for something else. So if any of you would like it or know of someone who would pleasee let me know. Thanks, Vonda

Christmas in July ????????

No actually i'm talking about Christmas in DEC-2009. Yes grandpa and i went to Worthington this morning and have the Holiday Inn Express [same as the last few years] reserved for Friday the 25th [christmas day] and Sat. the 26th. We can arrive any time in the afternoon on christmas day [we usually checked in around 1:30 or 2:00] and need to check out on sunday forenoon sometime. What we usually do is have our Pizza Party and gift opening the second night we are there--which would be sat. night.Grandpa and grandma furnish the pizza. Friday night you are on your own as to where you want to eat or what you want to order in.
We have the party room reserved and also have a crib reserved for Zoe.So hopefully most or all of you can make it and if not --- we understand. We hope you people understand as well that we just have to set a date and go from there. So start marking your calenders!!!!!
Last year we had 2 queen suites with pull out hide a bed-with frieg etc. plus 4 queen standard.
This year we went with 3 queen suites and 3 queen standard.L0ve grandma

Florida

Hi everyone,

Just to clarify, Jana played with an Iowa select team at this tournament in FL. She got to start and play every minute of every game. She had a blast. It was an international tournament so we played teams from the USA, Dominican Republic, Italy, Puerto Rico, Nova Scotia, Alberta, Manitoba and more! I have never seen such good volleyball. Jana was by far the smallest middle hitter, as every other team we played had middle hitters averaging from 6 ft 3 to 6 ft 7!!! Our team tied for 2nd in pool play but lost the tie braker, so went to the silver tournament rather than the gold tournament that they were hoping for. They did very well considering we only practiced together 4 days before the tournament and some of the teams they played have played together for a year. She had a blast and really enjoyed the girls she played with.

The weather was great and Den and I had a great time relaxing between all the volleyball games.

We look forward to seeing Jody and Shane on August 7-9. Scott is there right now visiting with them.

Jana is working this week and next week at volleyball camps at PC.

The summer is going way to fast.

Take care,
Arla

Saturday, July 25, 2009

well hello everyone i hope your summer is going well (mine is going by waaay to fast). soon school will be here and it makes me sad thinking that. well once again nothing real exciting here in chandler, our family (arvin, delaine and myself) are kind of landscaping our lawn. getting some new flowers and putting up a new border... were almost done :). ive been busy working at the chandler/jervels grocery store. thats been going well and ive just finished up volleyball league and this tuesday is my last basketball league night. i also just got back from a dordt bball tourny and our jv team played 3 varsity teams and only 2 jv teams and still got runner up to 3rd (and no thats not 4th place, it was weird rankings) out of 10 teams half of them being varsity! so we were pretty happy about that.
Jess and Darci are going to be here on sunday/tomorrow for a while so im looking forward to that aswell. who knows what we will be doing. probably playing some good old card and dice games. those seem to be the on going traditions we do everytime they visit.
ill be leaving with some friends to a cabin this week then i have a northwestern volleyball camp for 3 days with some other girls and then in 2 weeks on friday my mom, dad, and i leave for OHIO!!! :) im looking forward to this trip very much! and then after all that my mom and i start volleyball back up again. so there really isnt much of summer left sadly but its been a great summer so far! well i hope you are all doing great and enjoying the warmer weather while we can :). ill talk to you all very soon!

Family vote....

I had my mammogram on Monday and had good new. Everything looked good and I could go back to the yearly checkups.

However, on Tuesday I went to the dentis and had 2 teeth removed. That makes 5 teeth total (not including the wisdom teeth) i have had removed. I go back in next Tuesday to have the stitches removed and then I will have to decide a plan of action. 1.) have a partial plate made to replace the teeth that were removed and then continue with visits correcting the issues with the other teeth (which there are many issues) 2.) have a bridge put in (just like the one i had a few years ago when my other teeth were removed) and continue with visits correcting the issues I have with the other teeth or 3) become like Mom (love ya Mom) and have all lthe teeth pulled and wear dentures.

I know which way I am leaning but would love to hear other opinions both pro and con on the matter.

CWAV - Spirit Lake

Thesee are the last of the pictures from the CWAV weekend. Hope you all enjoyed them.
It hasn't been a great weekend for me as I started to get a toothache Friday night and I woke up Saturday in alot of pain. I found a dentist who saw me as an emergenct patient. He presecribed some antibiotic and also put some medication into the root of the tooth and i go back on Tuesday to haved 2 teeth pulled. So I am not in as much pain now but it is quite uncomfortable.
Tomorrow (Monday) I go in for a follow up mammogram, from the biopsy they did a few month s ag0.
