What Travis didn't say......read his first
When Travis was much younger and I would talk basketball with him I at some point in the conversation would call him "Scott Jr" (this is a good thing of course) because he loved the game so much and was always shooting hoops etc... and also because when I'd ask him when their next game was or who they played he never really knew. When I would ask Scott that same thing when he played basketball it was always "i don't know I just show up" I remember watching Scott in high school and how he always stayed composed on the floor even when the game wasn't looking so good or when the fans didn't agree with a call. I remember two times specifically that teammates got in trouble for actions on the floor but Scott never let it gget to him and always had great sportsmanship. I don't rememer what year it was but he was in high school and a parent came up to Arla and said how much they appreciated his attitude and approach to the game and this particular parent said she told her kids that this is who they should model themselves after in a game. So that was cool to hear as an aunt. That brings me to watching travis tonight and i thought to myself , that those cousins are alot alike, they both love the game, practice/d all the time, extremely focused on the floor etc... and Travis's sportsmanship on the floor tonight reminded me of Scott. It started with the National Anthem and Travis was the only one on either team with his hand across his chest. He made a point to shake hands with the starters on the opposing team before the game started. Other times it was just a matter of helping an oppenent up off the floor etc... But at one point in the game he was near the side of the court right in front of the HBC crowd and one of their fans (about a 45 year old guy) stood up on the second bench right in front of Travis and started yelling at him and waiting his finger at him (just like you do when you scold a child) I was so shocked at what i saw I turned to those sitting nexst to me and Dianne Huisken and I just looked at each other - and she said "did you see that guy and how he was in Travis's face"
So I admit it I was mad. I could not believe an adult would do that to a high school kid. Travis just looked at him and walked away and went and shot his free throws since there had been a foul called. I would have been upset had this been done to any one of the SW kids but it wasn't done to just any of the SW kids it was done to MY NEPHEW! So anyway, fast forward to the end of the game and we lost the game was over and it was time to go home.
So, I could not walk out of the gym without walking past that guy and you know me, I had to say something. I walked up to him, introduced myself and congratulated him on his team winning a hard fought battle. He kind of looked at me strange and then I said I also wanted to let him know that number 31 was my nephew and I didnt appreciate the way he was yelling at him and waiving his finger in his face. I went on to explain that it was a high school game and those actions are not needed. I told him my nephew did'nt deserve that - he went off about how i should ask him about what he did and see if I would be proud of him after that. I told the guy I am proud of him no matter what and if he did something wrong that is for the coach to discuss with him not me. He said I should talk to him about it - I told the guy I didn't see what went down or happened all i could see was him standing up, yelling and pointing a finger in his face and that is what i wanted to discuss with him not the basketball game. He continued to get feisty with me and again encouraged me to ask Travis why he yelled at him. I told the guy that even if Travis did do something wrong I don't understand how he as an adult thinks that standing up, yelling at him and pointing his finger in his face was going to solve anything as he should lead by example. He kept telling me to ask Travisk what he did but everytime I asked him what upset him so much to do that to a high school boy - he had no answer. I asked serveral times for him to tell me what caused him to get so upset and he woudln't do it. Finally he jsut said "you have a Merry Christmas mam" and I wished him a Merry Christmas also and I walked away, went to my car and drove back to Sioux Falls. I talked with Travis later and he didn't really know either why the guy was yelling at him he said he just looked at him for a it and then turned and walked away to shoot his free throws. So I don't know what that guys probelm was but I do know he was a bit taken back by me approaching him.
Scott, this reminded me of the story you told me once where you were taking the ball out of bounds and one of the fans said "I hate you Van Zanten". I asked what you did and you said kind of chuckled and continued on with the game. I know it is a long post but I just wanted to tell these two that they are/were fun to watch and their actions on the court are more important then any amount of points they scored. I love you both, am PROUD to be your Aunt. Scott, thanks for being a great role model on and off the court for your younger cousins and Travis you are doing the same.
*** Now a side note and have to go back a week. I went to Chandler to watch Diedra and Travis playball and Deidra you ahve come a long long way. You do great work out there and for those of you who don't know she starts for JV. Jeremy sat with me for half of Travis's game and I don't think you could find a prouder little brother he definately cheers Travis on during the game. I haven't made it to a grade school game yet but hope to make it to one or two of those also. I don't know if I got this totally right but I believe in the games they have plays Jason has something like 28 points and Jeremy has had a good showing also and even has 2 three pointers this season. Sorry Heather, I am not sure how your team is doing but feel free to blog and let us know (hint hint...)
I am really hoping the weather stays nice so I can make it to many more games.
Love ya all and can't wait for the hotel

snow in Pella
Well....we have 3 inches of snow on the ground this morning and they tell us 4-6 inches are possible tomorrow. Snow is pretty, but I sure hate scooping it. I need one of the VW's to come over with their big tractor and bucket and scoop it out for me, then maybe I'd like snow more! :)
We had a nice Thanksgiving. Scott and Jana were around which was really nice, but Jody and Shane were unable to make it, so we did miss them. I had the big meal here with the Mom and Dad VZ. We also enjoyed having all of Jana's friends around over Thanksgiving as well. Jana took a friend of her's here for Thanksgiving. Tawny is from WA and could not make the trip home. She is the one who had surgery and infection set in. She made daily trips to the hospital here in Pella to get IV antibiotics for her infection. She seems to be doing well, for which we are thankful.
We are hoping to make it to Shane and Jody on the 22nd until the 25th of December and then drive to Worthington on Christmas day in order to get to the hotel by that late afternoon or early evening. I'm praying the weather cooperates!
Well....I better go scoop!

THEY WON!!!!!!!! WOOO HOOOO YIIPPEEE
Since it was Monday night I had to work late, so Mom called right after work and kept me updated how it was going and to let me know that it was being covered by a different raido station then what we thought would cover it. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get it on either my car radio or home radio so mom sent me emails every so often and kept me updated. When it was the 4th game, with about 6 points left and we were ahead, she called me and I listened on the phone to her radio. Hey, it worked.
I won't go into details of how close the games were etc.... becasue I know I won't get all the deails right but just wanted to say congrats to Delaine and the varsity team. They play again in Marshall on Thursday night.
Deidra, could you maybe give a brief recap????
Looking forward to Thursday night,

******A special note to Deidra Danae and Travis Jay********I want to apologize for not getting to many of your games this year but the ones I did it sure was fun to watch. It just seemed like between the teeth, flu and a game or two of yours getting cancelled it just wasn't meant to be. I promise to be at more basketball games.
Good luck in tournaments Delaine. I hope you have many games ahead of you yet.

Heathers volleyball games
Northwestern Game
So I don't think I've written on here in forever and I decided I needed a break from studying so I thought I would. First of all thanks to everyone for coming to my games! It's so nice to have a cheering section. I can't quite hear grandma in the games but I watched the videos on the blog and I can definitely hear her yell.:) And Sharla thanks for the salsa. We've had quite a few salsa study breaks and my friends all want to meet you because they love your salsa so much! We play Northwestern on Saturday night, the 31st I think. Hopefully I get to see a lot of you there again and this time I promise it will be a better game than the last time we played! I just wanted to let you all know about the fund raiser we're putting on that night. The volleyball team wanted to do some kind of outreach program this year and we started talking about Amani Baby Cottage where me and my mom went last summer. So we're having a bake sale on the night of the Northwestern game and then people can buy our baked goods or give free will donations and all of the money will go to Amani. Amani still needs money to buy the property that they are on right now so hopefully the money we make will help a little bit for that. So I just wanted to let everyone know about that if you want to check it out before the game. I think I'm going to make a poster with some picture of the kids and everything. Other than that nothing too exciting is going on here. Lots of studying and volleyball. The countdown is already happening for Thanksgiving...only 4 and a half weeks!! Hope everything is going well in Chandler. Good luck in all your sports games Travis, Jeremy, Jason, Heather, and Deidra. I'm planning on coming to watch some basketball once volleyball gets done! Have a good week and hopefully see you all in a week! love, jana

Here are some videos taken of Jana last weekend.
TAKE THAT!
...AND THAT!!
AND THAT TOO!
No wonder she is tired after the game, look at that footwork when she isn't hitting the ball.
I am not really feeling any better but wanted to get this on the blog. Deidra, if I feel better I will be at your game on Thursday.

Quick note --

1/4 of the way through the last year... :-(
It has been a while since I have written on here and it has been quite a while since I have seen many of you (or been to Chandler), so I thought I would update you all on our life in OC, IA.
As you can tell by the title, it is now midterm break, so that means I have only 3/4 of a year left at Northwestern. I am having mixed emotions about this as I really love everything about NWC (especially my friends, professors, and psychology courses) but I am still excited about where Jess and I will be a year from now.
I have been super busy this semester with classes, work, applying to graduate school, and, most importantly right now, conducting my senior thesis research. This is a semester long research project, which will hopefully end with a thorough and lengthy (around 40-50 pages total) research report which may be publishable. I will not bore you with the details, but if you are interested just ask because I love to talk about it! While some of you may view this as a stressful situation, I just want you to know that I absolutely love every part of it (even though it can be stressful at points). I guess I picked the right field and career path after all...
I have also been applying to graduate schools, but there is not a lot of news about that situation as applications are not due until Dec. and Jan. I will be sure to keep you all updated when I know more.
Jess has been staying busy with work and fixing up the 1979 Lund fishing boat we got at the beginning of Sept. Now that the weather is getting chilly, he is definitely looking forward to ice fishing season. For now he has stayed busy a couple of weekends going home and helping his dad on the farm, which he always enjoys.
Unfortunately, we have not been able to go to as many of Jana's volleyball games as we would have liked, but we hope to get to a few more before the regular season comes to a close. Maybe we will see some of you there! We have been able to watch our sisters play volleyball at the Unity/MOC tournament about a month ago. We wish we could watch them more, but I guess something is better than nothing!
Well, as it is fall break and I have not left Iowa in 7 weeks (very sad, I know), we decided that we would take a road trip. We are heading up to Seth and Rebecca (Jess' brother and his wife) in Bemidji, MN for a long weekend (Friday to Monday). It is their daughter's (Rhianna) first birthday on Oct. 27, so we are going a little early to celebrate with them (it is crazy to think she is a year old already). Speaking of nieces... it occurred to me that Zoe turned 6 months old on Wednesday! Time really flies and she just gets cuter every day! I don't know about the rest of you, but she is one of the reasons (a big reason) I am already getting excited for Christmas!
That is about it from here (at least all I have time to write). I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and hopefully see you soon!
Love,
Darci
p.s. Does anyone know how many days there are until Christmas? ;-)

Tuesdays soccer game

It was cold and snowy so I took one quick video and these 2 pictures and called it good. After the game went inside and defrosted while we watched Deidras jv team and the varsity team win. I'll be warmer on Monday and post pictures of Deidras game that night. SouthWest plays in Sioux Falls Monday night :) YEAH!
Hi from the VZ
Sorry no pictures of me with a mohawk! :) Travis, I'm sorry the mohawks didn't help get you a victory. Oh well....it was worth a try right?! :) Grandma said you got hurt at the game. Are you doing ok?
Deidra, I heard you guys won again...way to go!
Delaine how is your team doing? Sounds according to Mom that all is going well....that's good. When do tournaments start for you?
The weather has been cool and damp here but, the good news is that it's supposed to be in the 60's again next week!
Just a quick update on Scott. He's in the Tucson, AZ region and is currently staying at a hostel there with two guys from France and a guy from CA. Sounds fun and interesting.
We will be heading up to Dordt on Friday for Parent's Weekend. Sounds like we may see some of you at Jana's game on Saturday night?! I hope her and the rest of the team are healthy as we have two tough conference games this weekend. On Tuesday night we had 4 girls missing from the team due to the stomach flu.
Jody and Shane are thinking of making it down to Jana's last two home games on Oct 30 and 31, so we're hoping to see them there and spend some time with them!
I have been busy cleaning every closet in the house. What a lot of junk I've thrown away. Also got all our carpets cleaned in the whole house. I thought after 8 years of pop and pizza stains it might be a good idea to finally clean them. I'm happy with the results and very glad I did it.
Take care,
Arla

Tim Mulder
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all As some of you know and some don't Tim is at the beginning stages of a BRIC flare up. He is on the meds that helped shorten it last time, but we really covet your prayers. In the past there has been 13 yrs between flare ups, but we only got 61/2 yrs this time. It took him 3 months last time for it to cycle last time and for him to get back to "normal." My prayer is that since it's only been 6 1/2 yrs that it last only have the time too. I guess that is what I am begging God for anyway. It is so hard to see him this way. He worked this afternoon and it was pretty exhausting for him. He is going to try and work from 10:40 to 4pm each day for the next two weeks, but he isn't very confident he will be working any more by the end of those two weeks. I know you are all really busy, but if any one would have a spare day to help me pull the dock out that would be great. But most of all we covet your prayers. For some reason I don't have everyone's e-mails in contacts so if you could forward this one to anyone I missed I would appreciate it. Love to you all Cindy
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know really much more about this other then what is in the email. I am assuming it is the same thing he had in high school and once after that (which would work according to the time line Cindy gave also) he turns "yellow" and looks jaundiced. He gets extremely tired and fatigued. It pretty much zaps him of all his energy. I will keep you updated
Love ya all, Vonda

Chicago weekend
Seems like a long time since I've written, but I know it's been even longer since some of you others have written anything. :) (hint, hint) :) Don't know a lot.
Jody and Shane met us South of Chicago last weekend to watch Jana/Dordt in a volleyball tournament there. Jana had quite a cheering section, as along with Jody and Shane she also had Shane's parents, G & G Van Zanten, Uncle Tony and Aunt Donna Van Zanten, 4 Calvin friends, 2 Trinity friends and her high school volleyball coach and his wife. We had a great weekend. Jody and Shane stayed at the same hotel as us and the team, so we got to spend time with them and Jana which was really nice.
Jody is getting a women's volleyball group going with in their church. They had 15 women show up last night, so that sounds like a lot of fun as well. Shane has class on Monday and Tuesday nights, so this gives Jody something to do on Tuesday nights.
Scott is in Tucson, AZ and sounds like he is enjoying the warm weather there. Our family spent a week in Tucson last March over spring break, so he is kind of familiar with the area a little bit.
Last night (Tues) we went to Jana's game at Dordt. Mom, Sharla and Jeremiah surprised us by showing up to watch too, so that was very nice!
Jana has her last weekend tournament this weekend Bellevue, NE and then from here on out it is all GPAC games.
I've had a busy, tiring day, as last night was late when we got back from Sioux Center and tomorrow I am getting all the carpets cleaned in our entire house, so today I did a lot of moving of furniture etc to get ready for them to come in early tomorrow morning. This is long over due, but I wanted to wait till all the kids had graduated and we didn't have kids over all the time eating pizze and drinking pop before I had them cleaned.
Take care,
Arla

It Was Hot

Kind of forget about the busy-ness of this time of year. There is never a shortage of things to do and I never feel quite caught up.
Volleyball faced Sioux Falls last night on the road and in an oven like Stewart Center the Defenders showed some grit and won the match, coming from behind at 2-1 to do so. Loy Griess banged out 15 kills as the Sioux Falls defense was intent on stopping Kendra Potgeter (10 kills) and Jana Van Zanten (eight kills). Turning point came in the fourth set when Dordt used a four point run to go from two down to two down, 12-14, 16-14 if my memory serves correctly. Got a big ace serve from Dorinda Hibma in the run. Good for the team to go through a competition like that. And did I mention it was hot…..it was. Hot a gym as I’ve been in….ever. Couple that with being stationed next to a humongous scoreboard that was throwing off heat like nobody’s business. It was like standing next to the sun. Anyhow, off to fifth ranked Northwestern on Saturday night.
TEETH - or the lack there of
I didn't work at all this week as wasn't able to talk very well becasue of the dentures so a bit hard to talk on the phone for 8 hours a day then. I went into the dentist on Wednesday and he shaved parts of the dentures down so that eally helped as i had many blisters from tight spots. It will still take some time before it all is "done" but Wednesdays appointment was a huge start.

Just like Grandma...... (teeth)
Tomorrow, I go the the dentist at 4pm as he wants to look at how I am healing and how the dentures fit. I will go to him twice a week for 2-3 weeks, then once a week for 2-3 weeks, and gradually decline till I don't see him anymore.
NOW FOR THE WEIRD PART...... the lady who called me back to the room to prep me for surgery was a former resident of Chandler! As she was getting me ready with the monitors, iv's etc.. she asked where I was from and I told her I live in Sioux falls now but originally Chandler and she resonded "wow, no way" I lived there for awhile and then we moved to Slayton. She then asked me if I knew a Darla Vander Woude and I said no thinking this must be someone from Slayton. She said that her Mom used to work at the Chandler bank and is back there again. I asked who that was and she said Theresa Myan (not sure of the spelling). She said her little sister went to a daycare in Chandler and that is when I made the connection that "Darla" was really Delaine Vander Woude. She said Yeah, she took care of my sister and I always remember that they had two cute little blonde girls. I asked her wehre she lived and she said in some apartments by "old lady De Kruif" ( with talking with Mom later she was referring to the old Christian Reformed parsonage next to where Leon and Sharla used to live and "old lady DeKruif " is Harvey DeKruifs mom) then she talked about how they moved to Slayton after the tornado. She said she still knows what she wore, where she was at etc.. every moment about that day. She said everytime June 16 rolls around she always things about that. She then asked if I watched the "Weather Channel" when they had the re-enactment on it. I told her that my nephew and niece played the part of some kids who hid under bed. To which she commented "yeah, I graduated from school with Jamie Van Persum, and that is about how she said "we are under the bed" and her mom thought she said "he is dead". So yeah, kind of ironic to find all this out about someone who is ready to pull my teeth.
That is all from toothless Vonda and caretaker Grandma,

FUN WEEKEND....once I got out of Sioux Falls
I was supposel to work till 12:30 on Friday and then I was going to meet Mom in Orange City where we would go and watch Jana play her first college Varsity volleyball game. S0 on my 10:30 break from work I drove the car to the gas station to fill up with gas and where I proceeded to have a flat tire (aauuggh). I called Mom as I was walking back to work and told her the situation she said she would pick me up and we would figure this out since I was going to be late getting back to work from my break and would not be able to deal with the tire till work was over. I was unable to take vacation time and jsut leave work early becasue I have to save all my vacation time for when I have my teeth removed on Wednesday.
So Mom picked me up and we went back to the car. I had to drive it (yeah, I know i am no suppose to do that but didn't have much choice at the time becasaue if I left it at the gas stattion they would have towed it) just a liittle ways across the parking lot and park it there where it was further out of the way.
I didn't want to attempt to change it at that time - as I have never fully changed a flat tire before and I thought lets get to the game and I will deal with it on Saturday when I return to Sioux Falls. So Mom and I started to leave Sioux Falls and I called a friend who I thought would be home (back in SF) by Sunday and see if he (yes a he - see above remember he is a friend and that is it) would be able to change it for me on Sunday. Well, it turned out he was in town and was willing to come change it then. So Mom and I turned around and met him at the gas station where he proceeded to put on the bunny tire for me. We thanked him and took off for te game. We only missed 1.5 games or matches (not sure which is correct) and were still able to watch Jana play. GAME 1: won in 3
After that we checked into the hotel :) Grandpa said we might as well do that wether then drive back again on Saturday, THANKS AGAIN DAD!!! Then we met up with the volleyball team and everyone else at the Pizza Ranch for supper. Then went back to the college and watched another game at 8:30 that night. GAME 2: won in 3 Den, Arla, Scott and some of his friends then all went out for ice cream together. It was fun seeing you again Scott hopefully will see you again as some more games.
Saturday we were back for another game at 11am. GAME 3: won in 3 Then a bunch of us went our for dinner at the Nederlanders resteraunt. Mom and I then spent the afternoon shopping in OC and having some fun......:) (pictures and videos to be posted tomorrow -- Jess and Darci - we love you!)
Then it was back to the college and we watched the last of the volleyball games for the weekend. Grandpa, Leon, Sharla and Jeremy drove up and cjoined us for this game. GAME 4 - won in 4
It was fun, fun, fun, fun to watch. Jana rocked it out on the floor.
Then off to Culvers in Sioux Center for supper and goodbyes were said and Leons family headed home and Grandpa and Grandma drove me back to my car in Sioux Falls.
So today I took it to a tire shop and they said the tire was to bad to fix and wanted me to buy new tires. I said to put the bunny tire back on and then I drove to Chandler and exchanged vehicles. They will have McClains check the tires tomorrow and I drove the blazer back to Sioux Falls. The plan is that Mom will drive my car back to Sioux Falls on Wednesday since she will be taking care of me after I have my teeth all pulled that day.
Jana, have another great game and good luck on Wednesday. I will have the computer set for grandma to watch it on but I have a feeling I will be drugged up and trying to sleep it off.
Lets see, for those of you who live away I believe Travis had his first soccer game last week Thursday and lsot a heartbreaker 3-2 in double overtime. He plays again this Tuesday. To my knowledge, SW hasn't played any volleyball games yet.
That is all for now.
Love ya all, Vonda

GRE... :S
This is a post to ask for your prayers. Tomorrow at noon I will be taking the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) in Sioux City, IA. I am slightly nervous as this will have some bearing on my graduate school applications and acceptance. I am hoping to earn a good score (that being a score I am satisfied with and falls within the averages of the graduate schools to which I am applying), so that I do not have to take it again during this semester. So, if you think of it, I would appreciate your prayers for tomorrow: safe travel, calm heart, clear mind, and most of all, a great score!
I have been studying for the past two weeks (total of 6 days with a break for Katie's wedding alst weekend), so I feel fairly prepared-- as prepared as one can be for a standardized test, so hopefully it all goes well.
Now that I think about it, Shane is taking graduate coursework... Jody, did he have to take the GRE? If so, any advice?
Thanks all!
Love,
Darci

Fruit salsa for chips - how daring are you?
1 tsp vegetable oil
2 Tbsp lime juice
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/3 of a red onion, finely chopped
1/2 bunch of scallion onions
A lady brought this to work and I know it sounds crazy but it is really good with chips. You eat it with chips just like you would any salsa or chip dip. I would personally cut back on the onions. Don't be scared and how about trying something new :)
Mom, did Shela ever give you that salad recipe from when we were at Adrian?
Love ya all, Vonda

packing my "baby"
Sad day today. Jana had a bunch of girls overnight last night and as I cleaned up the basement this morning, it made me very sad to think how all these girls will not be here all the time any more. Then we had to pack up the van and Jana's car with all her stuff and that made me even sadder. I can't believe we are actually sending our baby off to college. 25 1/2 years of kids in the home and now it's going to be finished. I can't say I'm looking forward to it, but then I guess, I really don't have much choice in the matter. :) Jana is ready though, so that's good.
We will be getting to Chandler tomorrow night at around 7:30 or 8:00. I don't think Scott is coming along. Be kind of a quick trip, so he says he'll come some other time.
Jana has freshman orientation and they have stuff for parents as well next Saturday the 22nd, so I am going to stay in Chandler Monday night through Friday. Den will come back up on Friday and then we'll head to Sioux Center early Saturday morning. So hopefully, I'll get to see most of you Vander Woude's in those few days!
Today is our 29th Anniversary and we are going to a the wedding of one of Scott's friends. How romantic right? This was another romance that kind of started in our basement when all Scott's friends would hang around on Sunday nights.
Take care. See you soon
Love,
Arla

Florida
Just to clarify, Jana played with an Iowa select team at this tournament in FL. She got to start and play every minute of every game. She had a blast. It was an international tournament so we played teams from the USA, Dominican Republic, Italy, Puerto Rico, Nova Scotia, Alberta, Manitoba and more! I have never seen such good volleyball. Jana was by far the smallest middle hitter, as every other team we played had middle hitters averaging from 6 ft 3 to 6 ft 7!!! Our team tied for 2nd in pool play but lost the tie braker, so went to the silver tournament rather than the gold tournament that they were hoping for. They did very well considering we only practiced together 4 days before the tournament and some of the teams they played have played together for a year. She had a blast and really enjoyed the girls she played with.
The weather was great and Den and I had a great time relaxing between all the volleyball games.
We look forward to seeing Jody and Shane on August 7-9. Scott is there right now visiting with them.
Jana is working this week and next week at volleyball camps at PC.
The summer is going way to fast.
Take care,
Arla
