PEA SOUP = SNERT

When I was in Orange City last week Friday night I went out to eat at a Dutch resteraunt with Jess and Darci and one of the things you could order was SNERT (or pea soup). Darci asked us if either of us had heard of pea soup being referred to as SNERT and none of us had, so I decided to put it on the blog.

Erwtensoep, also called "snert" is a form of green split-pea soup emblematic of Dutch cuisine. Traditionally eaten in winter, erwtensoep has a very thick consistency, often includes pork and sausage, and is almost a stew rather than a soup. One source says "You should be able to stand a spoon upright in a good pea soup."[2]
It is customarily served with rye bread (roggebrood) and cheese or butter. The meat may be put on the rye bread and eaten with mustard.
It is not uncommon to be sold in small cups at the so called 'Koek en zopie' outlets on frozen canals as a hearty snack to iceskaters.

The link is kind of fun to read it shows a recipe for pea soup and some Dutch translations.

vacation!

We're back after a wonderful week of vacation.

It was great to spend a relaxing week with our whole family in Arizona. We are very thankful that Shane and Jody were able to join us and that Scott and Jana's Spring Breaks were at the same time. The weather was great...in the mid 80's all week!

We spent a lot of time relaxing by the pool but also found time to watch a Milwaukee Brewers spring training baseball game and Den and Scott one night also went and watched the Philadelphia 76's and Phoenix Suns basketball game. We also hiked a little in Sabino Canyon and the Saguaro Desert. The highlight at Saguaro Desert was that we were on the path walking back and Jody and Jana were taking the lead and Jana all of the sudden saw a 4 foot rattlesnake right in front of them! The thing wouldn't move, so we went off the path and walked way around it! Needless to say our pace picked up drastically after that!

We also all made our picks for the NCAA tournament. Den's gets a little frustrated when someone (namely his wife) has no idea about the teams and doesn't even spell them right and yet somehow she is ahead of him (so far at least) :)

We got home at 11:30 last night.

Take care.

Mole update

I went to the doctor today and had the stitches removed from where they took the 7 moles off last week. To recap, 2 of the moles were removed becasue they where in a bad location (one by the bra strap and the other on top of my foot) and she removed 5 other moles "to be safe." Well, 3 of the 5 moles came back as pre-cancerous. She was quite surprised by that and re evaluated the area in which the moles were removed (middle of my back) to make sure no more needed to be removed.

She said this is good that we caught it as this stage and someting we will have to keep a close eye on in the future. I asked her how I was suppose to do that since I am single and can't really see my back to examine any moles. She suggested when I am home to have Mom look at my back every time and also every month or so have Mom take digital pictures of my back and the upload them on my computer. That way I can closely examine to see if there are any differences.

She (was my general doctor) is going to forward the lab results to Dr. Bell ( my Oncologist who did the hysterectomy) so she is aware of the situation. I don't forsee having to do anything else but keep a very close eye on the moles.

I am heading home tomorrow and meeting Delaine and Deidra in Edgerton to get my hairxcut and then I will head home to Chandler have dinner with the folks and spend the afternoon with them and then we will go to Pizza Ranch in Edgerton for supper and I will be back in Siox Falls tomorrow night.

black beard

this was when Leota had a beard growing contest for the 4th of July and all my brothers grew beards and so did grandpa. But Dad also grew a beard for the Chandler Centenial. Don't remember what year that was!!!! I could look it up but will do that later as Henry and Regina were here and it is now 11:45 and time for bed. Tomorrow i work at the thrift store all day and Grandpa will pick up Gert K and head to Edgerton for their therapy at 10:30 Thanks Vonda for the beautiful pictures of grandpa!!!!! LOve you all Grandma.

Dad's Birthday

I don't know when this picture was taken or if it was even around the same time as the next picture but at least it gives you an idea of what Dad/Grandpa looked like when he wore a beard. I don't remember if he wore it all the time or just around the 4th of July. I remember Leota having a beard judging contest? Dad, Mom help me out~

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

DAD

My how times have changed: look at that tiny bathroom, Dad shaving off his beard and me with long hair.

Was this the time you shaved off your beard and then Mom never even noticed? For those of you who don't know this story, Mom never liked Dad with a beard becasue when she kissed his she would always get poked by the whiskers in the beard. So one day Dad just shaved it off without telling her and then she never even noticed.

Dad, thanks for the great home you helped raise us in and the Christian upbringing. I love you dearly and hope you have many, many more healthy birthdays.

ankle

http://www.pediatric-orthopedics.com/Topics/Bones/Tib_Fib/LowerViewAxis.jpg

I want to clarify my remark about the broken ankle bone. I think it would be understood better if you go to this link and look at the picture. I am not sure which one is broke but either my lateral malleolus or medial malleolus is the bone that is broken off. It is one of the bones that help stabalize the ankle. Vonda

a walk down memory lane.......

If memory serves me right, Darci broke her arm at Bob and Faith Prins's house while they were babysitting her. However, Grandpa andd Grandma got the call to take her to the doctor. When I got home that day, I walked downstairs and Danielle and Darci were sitting by the table and when I asked that what they were doing Darci pulled her arm (in the cast) out from underneath the table.
Now, onto my news..... I went to the foot surgeon today and am scheduled for foot surgery on April 1. It will be same day surgery with about a 6 week recovery time. I will be out of work 1-2 weeks (I am thinking one since my whole job is sitting down). Anyway, there is a bone broke in my ankle but he isn't going to do anything with that as I can still walk, have good mobility etc... He said if they tried to correct the break it really wouldn't change anything as I would still be able to walk, have thesame amount of mobility and the ankle would still ache. They will be doing the surgery on the actual foot and the medical procedure name is WEIL SHORTENING OF 3RD METATARSAL AND PINNIN OG MTP JOINT. They will basically be shortening my 3rd toe and putting pins in the joints of the foot to help secure it together. He said the pain is caused by my high arches, and the fact my third toe is so much longer then it should be and the bones are really loose and flexible so it isn't giving my foot any stability when I walk. They will make the incision on the top of my foot. They probably would have done surgery sooner but they have to let the incision from a mote being removed in that area heal first.
I was not surprised to find out it was surgery - I jsut didn't know what type it would be. I didn't really ask alot of questions about how long on crutches, what type of cast or dressing I would have etc... because quite frankly once I heard "surgery" at that point I jsut kind of shut down and really didn't want to know what type of receovery I was in for as it wouldn't change anything anyway. I will probably call back next week sometime and ask a few more questions but right now jsut taking a day at a time.
Love ya all, Vonda

a walk down memory lane...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEON!

I went to the doctor today and had 7 moles removed. They will send 5 of them to the lab and the other two were just because I wanted them removed. Mom, the one that you HATE on my foot, I had them remove that one plus one on my back that always got hooked on my bra strap. I don't feel the other 5 are a huge concern but were a bit different and felt it was better safe then sorry and followed the docs advice and had them removed.

Loren, Sandy and kids were in town so after my appointment I picked the kids up at the mall and Sandy continued her shopping. Loren was doing some work around town. Then we all went out to Applebee's. It was a very nice time and a fun way to spend Friday (other the the moles of course).

Well, that is all from Sioux Falls,

Grandpa

Grandpa was to S Falls on Monday and got a cortisone shot put in his right hip and that doc. advised grandpa to go to therapy. He has a lot of strength in the legs but is so stiff. They do ultra sound and different exercise's lying down and and also walking exercise's.He needs to go 3 times a week for 4-6weeks.Gert Krosschell our neighbor fell in her home a few weeks ago and she started therapy this week also so we pick her up each time. Her kids were trying to line up drivers to take her as all the kids and inlaws have jobs----so they are pretty releived that we can take her along with us and are thankful that Edgerbrook will work along with us on this so that they can both have treatments at the same time.
Yea-yea---Sharla just called and said she will do Sunday dinner for Dad's Birthday.Love it!!!!
The weather is suppose to warm up tomorrow and sunday another yea yea!!!!!!
Must get dinner on so take care everyone. love grandma

Fun 10 days!

Hi Everyone,

Lord willing we are looking forward to a fun 10 days coming up! This afternoon we take a van full of girls up to Des Moines to go out to eat and then watch our PC boys in the State Championship! We play Solon who beat Western Christian yesterday 83-80 in DOUBLE over time. What a game!

Tomorrow Scott and Jana are playing in a coed volleyball tournament in Des Moines so that should be lot of fun. Then Sunday morning early we take off for AZ for a week. It is working out so great that Jody and Shane can come along and that both Scott and Jana's Spring Breaks are at the exact same time!

Forecast for AZ looks like in the 80's while we are there, so we're praying that holds true so that we can all have a very relaxing time sitting by the pool in the sun!

I hope all is going well for all of you. Happy Birthday Leon!

Vonda's latest

Well, not sure where to begin here other then by saying I went back to the doctor today. This time it was on my left foot and ankle. The ankle has been swollen and disfigured for probably 6-7 months now and I have been having sharp pains in my left foot that has continually gotten worse over the last months. I was going to have it checked out months ago but then "all the other issues started " and I kept putting it off thinking they were more important.

However, now that that is all settled down I went in and saw the doctor as the pain has also caused me some difficulty with falling asleep at night. Any, she pretty much took one look at it and did a quick exam and is forwarding me on to a surgeon. They will call me next week with who I am seeing and what date the appointment is,

She "feels something" in the foot - right where my pain is located.

I wanted the family to know but please don't say to anyone else till I have an answer as to what is causing the swelling and pain. Thanks, Vonda
